If you are in the process of a home makeover, or considering options for new home decoration, we have an expansive portfolio of interior design options. We offer architectural and interior design consultation and space planning services. Today we’d like to discuss the contemporary design style.

Contemporary decorating is classic, yet absolutely of the moment. It utilizes a light touch and natural materials to ensure it will never feel dated. This style is calm and serene, focusing on architectural elements, decorative details, concise color palette and bold scales, to create a warm, sophisticated space. The contemporary home has clean lines and plays on texture to create perfect balance.

A beautifully curated contemporary room features a mix of harmonious elements with conversation starters in a sea of neutrals. It is timeless, bringing a room together through luxurious simplicity which will never go out of style. Structural elements, including molding and exposed brick walls or pipes can be used for added character in a simple room.

Contemporary interior design typically involves mid-century modern and art deco elements, minimalism, and a restrained palette. Contemporary design style utilizes state of the art and/or eco friendly materials, including steel, glass, concrete, metal, and stone. This style offers high function, simple design with minimalistic elements and neutral colors. Typically, a space designed with a contemporary style will include asymmetrical elements along with a “one-off” piece.

Contemporary rooms typically have organic accents, such as wood, sculptures, textural features, and simple, calm, serene design. This style favors open floor plans, with kitchens, dining rooms and entertaining spaces flowing together seamlessly. Flooring is typically wood or vinyl, with area rugs helping to define areas in simple patterns and/or geometric shapes.

Contemporary spaces lack drapes, and window treatments are typically minimal if they are even present. Windows without curtains or blinds allow abundant natural light and dramatic shadows, creating patterns on walls and furniture. Spaces feature oversized trees or plants, touchable textiles, plush area rugs and large-scale geometric features.

Contemporary style is uncluttered and minimalistic. Lighting design frequently highlights architectural and statement pieces with unobtrusive, focused illumination. This style uses simplicity as an opportunity for versatility and spontaneity in art elements and accessories. By selecting a neutral setting, you can bring in smaller hints of color and expressive artworks.

Contemporary style furniture is pared-down, smooth, clean and statement-making, with geometric silhouettes and straight lines. Neutral colors and materials, solid hues and finishes, textured fabrics and unadorned surfaces are components to look for. You can add pops of color with throws and pillows.

At A&R Interiors, all of our interior designers are professional designers, well-versed in all design styles, and can customize your design to reflect your unique lifestyle and tastes.  We offer architectural, home and interior design consultation, space planning services, and an expansive portfolio of unlimited resources to help bring your personal style to life!
