What is Transitional style?

A transitionally designed space is a blending of traditional style with another, more modern style. Typically, transitional is referred to when the design is moving from traditional to contemporary or modern but could also be moving to eclectic. Elements of the new style are strategically added in while others are removed, resulting in a space that is pleasantly balanced between the two styles

The hallmarks of a transitional design are comfortable furniture, a neutral palette, minimal accessories, and organic textures. Because transitional spaces blend the classic warmth of traditional style with modern comforts and sophistication, the result is a space that appears effortlessly chic and always feels contemporary.

Furniture with right angles and crisp lines are mixed with more rounded silhouettes…. a Victorian-inspired chandelier hanging over a modern, clean-lined dining table… a deep-seated sofa with graphic pillows. Often, the transition starts with traditional pieces the homeowner already has mixed with some newer, more modern pieces. This may occur as a family grows bigger, their activities change, and their needs for their space change.

The color palette of transitional design is pulled from the elements…clean, and serene with natural, peaceful colors…neutral beige, taupe, and creams. Gray tones have also been popular in recent years…often we use both gray and beige together and add pops of color according to the homeowners’ preferences and lifestyles. The neutral base of the transitional color palette leaves a lot of room to play with fabrics and patterns…. such as textured chenille on sleek wood furniture or graphic patterns on overstuffed sofa pillows. In bedrooms, crisp white cotton wor textured linen bedding in darker shades for contrast.

In paint color, transitional options tend to have a stronger balance of warm and cool tones. Where most colors lean predominantly either warm or cool, transitional color stays within a 50/50 or 60/40 balance of warm/cool undertones, thus protecting your home from changing trends.
