What is Eclectic Design Style?

By definition, eclectic means to “derive ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. (Oxford)” In interior design, eclectic style is a mixture that is not limited to one design style. Eclectic design often combines traditional basics with sophisticated elements and global accessories. Are you a collector? A traveler? A comfort-seeker? The eclectic design relies on personal accessories that illustrate the lifestyle of its clients.

In an eclectic space, the balance of furniture can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical but there is always a focal point to grab the eye and say “Aha! This is an interesting home.” If our client is an art collector, we’ll create a full gallery wall as a focal point. Or perhaps one large great room can be the focal point of the home. The focal point could even be an incredible view if that is available. When we have views, we optimize them by using eclectic design elements to bring the eye to the view as frequently as possible.

Textured wall covering in darker colors and wallpaper are used sparingly but to great effect in building the focal point…perhaps in a powder room, the accent wall of a child’s bedroom, a fireplace, or media wall. The eye travels to that spot…showcasing the height or the size…and most of all the lifestyle of the client and their family.

Eclectic design is much brighter and lighter in its application of color and light…sand rather than stone and lighter woods than those used in the traditional style which tends toward darker woods. Use one or two accent colors throughout the home to bring a cohesive look to your eclectic style. Like most design styles, eclectic spaces require balanced lighting. In every room, there should be a triangle of lighting which evens out the availability and effect of the lights. Having all the lighting on one side leaves the other side in shadow. Spotlights can sometimes help but will not provide the style or personalization that lamps or other lighting fixtures will. Today, there are so many different chandeliers and unique fixtures that can add valuable personal touches to any space.

Many times, the window coverings in an eclectic space are LESS, not MORE. They can be a wonderful add-on but never the main feature. Eclectic window coverings are much lighter and more geared toward the outside, such as roman shades, plantation shutters, or bamboo shades which really help define a casual room with an eclectic tone.

A&R always puts the client at the center of the design project so our initial dialogue is a tell-me-who-you-are conversation so that we can show you as your best self. Interior design shows the personality of the client because this is their home. Sometimes, customers do not know their style, so we may ask you what you like? What are your hobbies? What colors are typically in your closet? This information will help guide us in determining how to accessorize your eclectic space. Eclectic design does not mean anything goes…it means your space can be successfully curated from a variety of colors, fabrics, patterns, and art items that mean something to you. Thoughtful mismatching of accessories such as rugs, pillows, and other tabletop décor can give any space an eclectic appeal.

At A&R Interiors, all of our interior designers are professional designers, well-versed in all design styles, and can customize your design to reflect your unique lifestyle and tastes.  Schedule a consultation today to see how we can help design your home.
